Danubio thrashed rivals Defensor Sporting 3-0 in a one-sided match at the Jardines del Hipodromo stadium in Montevideo on Sunday.
All of Danubio’s goals came in the second half, when Defensor lost midfielder Pablo Gaglianone to a red card. The goals were scored by Diego Ifran, Esteban Conde and Colombian veteran Hamilton Ricard.
The derby is the second most important in Uruguay, behind the confrontation between traditional heavyweights Nacional and Penarol.
Penarol, Uruguay’s most popular club, were held to a 1-1 draw by Cerro at the Centenario stadium. Maximiliano Lombardi put Cerro ahead early in the second half, but Gerardo Alcoba earned Penarol a point three minutes from full-time.
On Saturday, defending champions Nacional beat Tacuarembo 1-0 with a Diego Vera strike ten minutes into second half injury-time at a packed Parque Central stadium. It was Nacional’s second consecutive win.
In other matches, Rampla Juniors edged Wanderers 1-0, Racing defeated Fenix 2-0, Central Espanol and River Plate drew 2-2 and Liverpool beat Atenas 2-0.
Danubio and Liverpool lead the championship with six points after two rounds. They are followed by Penarol, Racing, Rampla Juniors and River Plate, with four points. Nacional have three points, after having been deducted three points.
