FIFA: Lionel Messi named Player of the Year

MessiAs was expected Argentine attacker Lionel Messi was named FIFA World Player of the Year for 2009 on Monday. Messi was in sensational form for Barcelona throughout the year, earning them six titles including the UEFA Champions League, the Club World Cup, the Copa del Rey and Spain´s La Liga.

Messi won by a huge margin, compared to the previous two winners — Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka — as he was clearly the best player of the year, not only individually but also when taking into account what he achieved with his club.

On Saturday Messi scored an extra time winner to give Barcelona a 2-1 victory over Estudiantes de La Plata in the final of the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Barcelona had never been world champions before.

“It is beautiful to achieve a year that cannot possibly be improved,” said Messi. The Argentine called the FIFA award “the icing on the cake.”

Messi scored 38 goals in 51 matches in all competitions for Barcelona during the 2008-09 season.

The women´s Player of the Year award went to Marta of Brazil. She won the award for the fourth consecutive year.

He deserves it, as he says this was a flawless year for him, he won every damn competition there is.

I think his objectives with club are over and now the only thing he really needs to win is a world cup.
