Uruguay: Brief guide to Nacional-Penarol superclasico

NacionalPenarolClub Atletico Penarol and Club Nacional de Football will clash in the latest edition of the Uruguayan derby for matchday 13 of the Apertura championship on Sunday, December 6, at the historical Centenario stadium.

Known to locals as the ‘Superclasico’, it’s a match that divides the proud football nation in half, prompting even those identified with other clubs to pick a side during the bout.

The first encounter, a friendly won 2-0 by Penarol, dates back to July 15 of 1900, making it the oldest, longest running top-flight football rivalry outside the British Isles.

Since then it’s pitted the bitter rivals a staggering 495 times. Los Manyas currently have the edge in head-to-head match-ups, with 179 wins to Nacional’s 160, something Penarol fans never miss an opportunity to point out.

Nacional fans, for their part, are quick to retort with the largest margin win in the derby, a 6-0 thrashing during the 1941 Uruguayan season, and the fixture’s all-time top scorer, Argentine-born striker Atilio Garcia with 34 goals.

Next Sunday’s clash will be the 16th derby of the Apertura championship. Since its inception in 1994, Nacional have claimed 8 victories, Penarol 5 and there have been 2 draws.

The most recent encounter between the two, during last season’s Clausura championship, ended 3-2 in favour of Nacional, with a hat-trick by Gustavo Biscayzacu. Both of Penarol’s goals were converted by veteran attacker Antonio Pacheco.

With only three matchdays remaining in the 09/10 Apertura championship, Nacional lead the competition with 27 points, while Penarol are fourth with 23 and need a win to keep their title hopes alive.

In regards to derby match-ups, the highest scorer is Nacional’s Atilio Garcia with 34 goals. For Penarol, the highest scorer is Fernando Morena with 27, followed by Jose Piendibene with 21. Alberto Spencer scored 12.

Specer is the top goalscorer in the Copa Libertadores however, with the bulk of his goals in the tournament being for Penarol (48 of 54).
