Argentina: Fernandez gives Banfield opening day win over River

Uruguayan striker Sebastian Fernandez struck in the 74th minute to give defending champions Banfield a 1-0 victory over River Plate at the Monumental stadium in the opening round of the Argentine Clausura championship on Sunday. Banfield dominated much of the play and were well worth the three points, as they look to win back-to-back championships this season.

Banfield, who won the Argentine championship for the first time in their history last season, started the stronger of the two sides, and created several clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities in the first half.

River, who are expected to be title candidates this season, were kept in the game by goalkeeper Daniel Vega, who made a number of fine saves.

After the break Banfield continued to be the better side, and they almost went ahead when Fernandez fired a point-blank effort onto the left post.

However, in the 74th minute the Uruguayan international redeemed himself by scoring what ended up being Banfield´s winning goal. Fernandez latched onto a good through ball and beat Vega with a precise low shot.

The round opened on Friday night, with victories going to Godoy Cruz and Estudiantes, over Gimnasia La Plata and Arsenal, respectively.

On Saturday, Chacarita Juniors beat Tigre 2-0, Velez Sarsfield drew 1-1 with Colon de Santa Fe and San Lorenzo edged Atletico Tucuman 1-0. The biggest result, however, was Racing Club´s comprehensive 3-0 victory over Rosario Central. Racing are expected to be a force this season, after making a number of important purchases in the off-season.

Seba Fernandes is awesome his partnership with Silva was mad but now he moved to Velez how can they let him go? I don`t understand the system. Why sell your best player to another rival club. Could Banfield not afford him and they buy lots of players. Shaffer, Ramirez and the player x boca from a Ukrainian club. How bout Velez with Silva, Lopez, Cristaldo and many more up front. Who will they buy next Messi? I Velez the richest club in Argentina or is it Banfield???? I would like you know your opinion on this Gregory

I saw this guy Seba play in Defensor and he was so quick and tricky. I wonder if he will go to a European club?
