River proves to be too powerful for Boca in Argentina

After beating Boca Juniors 3-1 on Wednesday in Mar del Plata, River Plate won the first Superclasico of the year. Los Millonarios was by much the superior team on the night and had they not missed numerous clear-cut chances in the dying seconds of the game, they might have won by a considerably wider margin.


Rodrigo Rojas of Paraguay defeated Roberto Abbondanzieri with a well-executed attempt as Leonardo Astrada’s team immediately raced to the attack after the kickoff.


Both sides attacked at every available chance as the game progressed at a frantic pace.


When Juan Roman Riquelme sent a crisp free kick into the box in the 30th minute, Martin Palermo outran his defender to score for Boca.


The game slowed down after the first half as both teams were content to tie it up at halftime.


River almost took the lead two minutes after the restart, but teenager Daniel Villalva struck the right post after tenaciously fighting his way into the area.


River, who were missing Marcelo Gallardo and Ariel Ortega, two important players, kept up the pressure as they looked for a goal.


Rogelio Mori gave River the lead in the 55th minute by beating Abbondanzieri with a header after the Boca goalkeeper was unable to stop his first attempt.


Villalva scored River’s third goal of the game ten minutes later with an outstanding solo effort. He passed his defender after a deft one-two and slid the ball past Abbondanzieri.


Man-of-the-match When Villalva was substituted by Gustavo Bou in the 72nd minute, River supporters gave him a standing ovation.


A few minutes later, Nicolas Gaitan forced Boca down to 10 men by returning a bottle that River supporters had hurled at him.


River continued to dominate and pushed to the offensive with great effectiveness at the end of the game, which may have further increased their lead. For Boca, Abbondanzieri made a lot of excellent stops to salvage the day.
