Argentina: Veron named South American Footballer of the Year

Estudiantes de La Plata midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron was voted South American Footballer of the Year for the second consecutive year, by prestigious Uruguayan newspaper El Pais. Veron won by a landslide margin ahead of Chilean international Humberto Suazo.

Veron guided Estudiantes to the Copa Libertadores title, after a dramatic victory over Cruzeiro of Brazil in the final. With Veron on the field, Estudiantes were only two minutes away from being crowned world champions, however, they ended up being beaten 2-1 by European champions Barcelona after extra-time.

“La Brujita” was also important in guiding Argentina to the 2010 World Cup. He was by far Argentina´s best player as they defeated Uruguay 1-0 in Montevideo to clinch their finals berth.

The newspaper also revealed the “ideal” South American Team of the Year for 2009, which was the following: Miguel Pintos, Jairo Campos, Leandro Desabato, Nicolas Otamendi, Gary Medel, Edison Mendez, Juan Sebastian Veron, Nicolas Lodeiro, Humberto Suazo, Salvador Cabanas and Claudio Bieler.

    Had an amazing 2 years, too bad he fell short with the club world cup, barca was just too good this year
