Estudiantes de La Plata midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron was voted South American Footballer of the Year for the second consecutive year, by prestigious Uruguayan newspaper El Pais. Veron won by a landslide margin ahead of Chilean international Humberto Suazo.
Veron guided Estudiantes to the Copa Libertadores title, after a dramatic victory over Cruzeiro of Brazil in the final. The newspaper also revealed the “ideal” South American Team of the Year for 2009, which was the following: Miguel Pintos, Jairo Campos, Leandro Desabato, Nicolas Otamendi, Gary Medel, Edison Mendez, Juan Sebastian Veron, Nicolas Lodeiro, Humberto Suazo, Salvador Cabanas and Claudio Bieler.
