Transfers: Sebastian Abreu joins Botafogo

After much speculation, Uruguayan international Sebastian Abreu was confirmed the latest incorporation of Brazilian outfit Botafogo. Abreu has agreed to join the Rio de Janeiro club for two seasons.

Abreu,33, had attracted the attention of several clubs, including Malaga of Spain and Nacional of Uruguay, but after weeks of negotiations with both teams he received a lucrative offer from Botafogo and decided that it was the best alternative.

“Everything has been arranged between us and Botafogo. We signed a two-year contract. He will arrive in Rio this week,” Geraldo Arias, the agent of the player, told Lance.

“El Loco” has played for 16 clubs during his career, which included Deportivo La Coruna, River Plate, San Lorenzo, Gremio, as well as six Mexican clubs.

Abreu will likely participate in the 2010 World Cup with the Uruguayan national team, after having secured their berth in the finals with a goal against Costa Rica in the World Cup qualifying playoff.
