In the Avellaneda Derby, Independiente defeated Racing in Argentina

In the hotly contested Avellaneda derby at the Libertadores de America stadium on Saturday, Independiente defeated Racing Club 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick conversion from Dario Gandin just before halftime. With both sides using 10 players to complete the game, it was a relatively equally matched encounter. With the victory, Independiente increased their likelihood of taking home the Argentine Clausura title this year.

Racing Club got out to the stronger start of the two teams, and ex-Argentine international Roberto Ayala nearly gave them the lead with a header that hit the crossbar.

However, Independiente took control of the game after that point. In the 39th minute, Braian Lluy handled the ball within the penalty area, and Independiente was given a penalty. Independiente was given the ball by Gandin, who moved to the spot.

In the 59th minute, Gabriel Hauche reduced Racing to 10 men, which caused the game to loosen up and allow both sides to have chances to score. Racing emerged as the superior team in the second half, but they were unable to compel what would have been a fair tie.

Huracan overcame Velez Sarsfield 3-2 in the other games on Saturday, and Colon de Santa Fe and Rosario Central drew 1-1.

Estudiantes de La Plata held Boca Juniors, the most well-known team in Argentina, to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at the Bombonera stadium. Martin Palermo gave Boca the lead from the penalty spot in the 24th minute, but Leandro Gonzalez earned Independiente a point out of the blue late in the second half with a spectacular half-volley from a long goal kick.
