Copa Libertadores victory for Banfield

In their Copa Libertadores Group 6 matchup, played on Wednesday at 2,550 meters above sea level in Ecuador, the Argentine Apertura winners Banfield easily defeated Deportivo Cuenca of Ecuador 4-1. Another Argentine team, Lanus, also had bad luck when they were defeated 2-0 by Universitario de Deportes in Peru.

Banfield outplayed their opponents and took the lead 10 minutes before halftime on playmaker Walter Erviti’s fantastic long-range goal.

Four minutes later, Sebastian Fernandez of Uruguay’s national team added Banfield’s second goal, and 60 seconds later, his team’s third.

With a strong finish in the 71st minute, Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez further increased their advantage.

Five minutes before the game’s finish, Cuenca’s Gabriel Mendez scored a goal from the penalty spot.

Lanus lost against Universitario de Deportes in Peru 2-0, handing them their second straight loss in the campaign.

The Peruvians defeated Lanus and took the lead in the 18th minute on a superb solo goal by Piero Alva.

With a powerful header in the 88th minute, Gianfranco Labarthe gave Universitario the victory. This was Universitario’s second victory in the match.
