Nearly an hour after declaring that he would put up with supporters’ taunts because of Corinthians’ poor performance, Ronaldo lost his cool and erupted by making an uncharacteristic gesture to the crowd. After Corinthians lost 1-0 to Paulista, Ronaldo gave a middle finger to a group of about 30 supporters.
To get away from the taunts, the Corinthians team sought the assistance of the police. The team’s most abused player was Ronaldo, who was referred to as “fatty” by the crowd following a subpar performance. According to one of the spectators, Ronaldo was “robbing my team.” Having had enough of the taunts, Ronaldo got into his BMW and drove off.
Ronaldo’s recent slump in performance has hurt his chances of being selected for Brazil’s World Cup team in 2010.
Corinthians are presently in fifth place in the Paulista State championship with 26 points, nine points behind the league-leading Santos, with only seven victories from 16 games.
