After a superb week where he scored eight goals in three matches Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has been compared to the great Diego Maradona, and many believe that the 22-year-old may have already surpassed the Argentine football legend.
But despite the praise Messi is well aware that the only way to surpass Maradona as being the best player in the history of the game is by leading Argentina to the World Cup title in South Africa. Maradona achieved World Cup glory during his prime, by playing a key role as Argentina won their second World Cup in 1986. Maradona also played a part as Argentina reached the final of the 1990 World Cup.
“To be a legend one has to win the World Cup,” a humble Messi affirmed to Mundo Deportivo after one of the most impressive weeks of his career.
With his incredible hat-trick for Barcelona on the weekend, Messi became the first Barcelona player to score two hat-tricks in successive weeks in the Spanish league. Messi also scored a double as Barca trounced Stuttgart 4-0 in the UEFA Champions League.
“I´m 22 years old and everything is happening really quickly. One has to stay calm,” said Messi, who admitted to not having planned any of his three goals against Real Zaragoza. “It happened because it happened. I don´t think, nor do I work to score those goals. The important thing is to try it.”
Messi concluded by saying: “I never try to disrespect anybody. I only play football. I play it in my own way. ”
