Following Thursday’s 3-0 demolition of Boca Juniors against Colon de Santa Fe, Abel Alves announced his resignation. Alves had earlier in the week promised to stay at Boca until the end of the campaign, but the team’s humbling loss to Colon was the tipping point for the coach. Roberto Pompei will take over as the team’s temporary coach as of Friday afternoon in lieu of Alves.
Omar Larrosa will help Tito Pompei, a former Boca player who now coaches the team’s sixth division. In preparation for Monday’s match at the Bombonera stadium against Arsenal de Sarandi at Clausura championship round 14, both will oversee the training session on Friday in Casa Amarilla.
Alves made the decision to resign from his job after Boca’s humiliating loss to Colon, which was their third straight defeat, and altercations with players Pablo Mouche and Javier Garcia.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto, a player with the Columbus Crew, is the front-runner to take over as the next official coach of Boca. On Tuesday, he will say whether he accepts the suggestion made by Boca president Jorge Ameal.
Angel Cappa, Diego Cagna, Miguel Angel Russo, and Julio Falcioni are more candidates for the open coaching role.
