After his team’s tight defeat against Gimnasia La Plata on Saturday at the Nuevo Gasometro stadium, former Argentine international Diego Simeone announced his resignation as San Lorenzo’s head coach. Several hours after the game, the club’s vice president, Guillermo Soppi, gave the local press confirmation of the story.
According to the director, Simeone offered his resignation during a 40-minute reunion in the local locker room. San Lorenzo’s temporary coach will be named before Wednesday’s match against Argentine champions Banfield. Soppi asserts that an existing club employee will serve as the interim coach.
On Easter Sunday at 10 am, Simeone, 39, will bid his team farewell at a private training session at the Nuevo Gasometer.
The ex-Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Inter Milan, and Argentina midfielder departed the stadium without making any statements after being abused by the incensed home crowd following his team’s 1-0 loss to Gimnasia.
San Lorenzo is currently in seventh place in the 20-team league with 11 points, while in the last Apertura tournament, also managed by Simeone, the team placed seventh with 32 points.
