Thursday afternoon’s Copa Libertadores Group 8 match between Universidad de Chile and Flamengo saw the Brazilian team held to a 2-2 draw at the Maracana stadium. Flamengo was minutes away from earning a significant victory when they let up a goal in stoppage time of the second half. Due to Rio de Janeiro’s severe flooding, the match that was initially planned for Wednesday was postponed.
On the verge of halftime, Argentine player Walter Montillo handed the Chileans a shocking lead when he headed the ball in following miscommunication in the Flamengo backline.
With Bruno Mezenga joining Vagner Love in the attack in the second half, Flamengo was able to pose a greater threat to the Universidad de Chile goal.
After exerting significant pressure, Michael equalized the score for Flamengo in the 68th minute with a powerful shot that, in part because of the rain, two Chilean defenders were unable to block.
When Esteban Conde took down Vagner Love in the area, the Brazilians should have been given a penalty kick as they proceeded to approach the UChile goal.
Leo Moura, though, gave Flamengo the lead a few minutes later with a strong finish after Michael’s attempt went wide.
However, the Chileans would ultimately get the last laugh as Matias Rodriguez saved them a key point in the final seconds of the second half.
With eight points, one more than Flamengo’s seven points after the outcome, the Chileans remain in first place in Group 8. With three points each, Universidad Catolica and Caracas are just behind them.
