Inter wins the Copa Libertadores, and the bracket is set

Internacional of Porto Alegre defeated Deportivo Quito of Ecuador 3-0 at a jam-packed Beira-Rio stadium on Thursday night to advance to the round 16 round of the Copa Libertadores as the group’s top team. The 2006 Copa Libertadores champions defeated their rivals along the road by outperforming them significantly.

Inter, who had a challenging start to their Copa Libertadores campaign, won with goals from Andrezinho, Bolivar, and Guiliano. From beginning to end, Inter controlled the game, finishing the group stage undefeated.

Colorado ended with 12 points as a consequence, which allowed them to overtake Deportivo Quito, who took second place.

As soon as play began, Jorge Fossati’s team pressed forward on offense, and their strategy paid off as they took the lead in the third minute on a goal by Andrezinho from a corner kick.

Throughout the first half, Inter applied constant pressure to the Deportivo Quito goal, but they were forced to wait until Bolivar increased their advantage in the 61st minute.

In the last seconds of the second half, Giuliano gave Inter the win, much to the pleasure of the large (35,000) audience.

In the competition’s round of 16, Internacional will take on Banfield of Argentina. The Florencio Sola stadium in Buenos Aires will host the series’ first match the following week.

After a close 1-0 victory over Colombia’s Independiente Medellin at the Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo, Corinthians earned the most points (16) and finished first in the group stage. Juan Valencia’s own goal in the 22nd minute gave the game its lone score.

In the following round, Flamengo, another Brazilian team, will play The Timao. Flamengo, who had to rely on other people’s outcomes, just made it into the knock-out round of the competition with 10 points.

After being held to scoreless draws, Uruguayan clubs Cerro and Racing were both eliminated from the competition.

Cerro outplayed Emelec in Montevideo, but Marcelo Elizaga, the goalie for Emelec, saved the day.

Racing in Asuncion, Paraguay, produced the better scoring opportunities but was unable to overcome a strong Cerro Porteno.
