Highly-rated Argentine winger Angel Di Maria has attracted the attention of Spanish giants Real Madrid, club whom are willing to purchase the player for €40 million next season. Di Maria, 22, has been in sensational form for his Portuguese club Benfica and his good performances have guaranteed him of a spot in Diego Maradona’s Argentina squad for the 2010 World Cup.
“In Portugal they confirm that there has already been contact between Benfica and Real Madrid, and that the “white” club are willing to offer €40 million to secure the Argentine,” affirmed both Spanish newspaper MARCA and Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
Di Maria, who was born in Rosario on February 14, 1988, started his career at local club Rosario Central, before completing a move to Benfica, where he plays alongside compatriots Pablo Aimar and Javier Saviola.
The midfielder, a gold medal winner with Argentina at the Olympic Games of Beijing, works under the same agent as that of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Mendes, and this should facilitate his transfer to Real Madrid.
Only last week Maradona confirmed that Di Maria will start for Argentina at the World Cup in South Africa, and this level of confidence in the player has also sparked interest from Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona as well as from Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.
