Penarol is one victory away from winning in Uruguay

The giants of Uruguay Penarol will be seeking the Clausura championship with a win against Fenix on Saturday. Penarol has won all eleven of its games thus far this season and will take on second-placed Fenix looking for their twelfth victory. At Montevideo’s storied Centenario stadium, the Carboneros will face a throng of about 55,000 spectators.

Penarol enters the game with 33 points from 11 games and an average of three goals scored per game. At the Centenario stadium over the weekend, Penarol defeated Cerrito 3-1.

Penarol’s head coach, Diego Aguirre, will make two adjustments to his team. Alejandro Gonzalez will be replaced by Gerardo Alcoba, while Egidio Arevalo Rios will be rested to prevent him from receiving a fifth red card, which would cause him to miss the clasico against Nacional because of suspension. Marcelo Sosa will take up his role.

The tournament’s surprise entry, Fenix, enters the contest. They are seven points behind Penarol in second place, although they still have a chance to win the championship. They have eight victories, two draws, and just one loss after eleven rounds. Fenix defeated Danubio 2-1 last week.

The game, which will be overseen by Jorge Larrionda, will begin at 4 p.m. at the Centenario stadium.
