Argentina: Claudio Borghi hired by Boca Juniors

Borghi penned a one-year deal with Boca Juniors

Claudio Borghi was officially unveiled as the new coach of Argentine giants Boca Juniors by club president Jorge Amor Ameal on Thursday afternoon. Borghi will not only have the responsibility to lift Boca back into contention for the Argentine championship — after three awful seasons — but also the responsibility to fight for South America’s biggest club competitions, like the Copa Libertadores.

“We are very happy to have spoken to Claudio (Borghi), we are starting a new chapter and Boca has started it with all of our strength. We have discovered Claudio, a great man, and for us, it is very important,” Ameal told reporters during a press conference at the Bombonera stadium.

During the presentation, Borghi affirmed that Boca needs reinforcements to confront the Argentine Apertura championship.

“I need some specialists for the libero position. I can’t yet speak about reinforcements,” Borghi said, after signing a one-year contract with the club.

“This is the most important challenge I have had up until this moment,” he added.

The coach is hoping that Juan Roman Riquelme and Martin Palermo continue at the club, but he also admitted his desire to count on Sporting Lisbon and Chile star Matias Fernandez, a player who he coached at Colo Colo.

Borghi, 45, won four consecutive titles in Chile with Colo Colo between 2006 and 2007. He won his first league title with an Argentine club only last Sunday with Argentinos Juniors — the club’s first title since 1985.

After the title triumph, Borghi understands that he will be expected to lead Boca to the Argentine title as well. “The only objective is to be champions,” he affirmed. Borghi will assume the position in mid-June.
