World Cup: Argentina defeats Haiti with a goal from Palermo

One of the four goals scored by Argentina is by Martin Palermo

Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, defeated Haiti 4-0 in one of their final exhibition games before traveling to South Africa to compete in the 2010 World Cup. Los Albicelestes were missing their best players who were located in Europe, but it was an excellent chance for Maradona to assess his local players before finalizing his 30-man initial roster, which will be reduced to only 23 players for the World Cup.

Historical Martin Palermo, a striker for Boca Juniors, also scored, as did Facundo Bertoglio, who scored twice. Sebastian Blanco added the other goal for Argentina.

At the Alianza stadium in Cutral-Co, Neuquen, the Argentines thoroughly controlled the action with support from close to 17,000 spectators.

After Bertoglio gave Argentina the lead by taking advantage of a defensive blunder by Haiti, Palermo increased Argentina’s advantage by connecting with a right-wing cross with a signature header, increasing his chances of making the World Cup. Before scoring, Palermo was unintentionally cut in the chin by a fireworks projectile that was shot from the stands.

Attacker Blanco of Lanus scored Argentina’s third goal with a cross from beyond the box that deceived goalie Jean Dominique Zephirin of Haiti before going in. With a powerful crossing shot from the left side of the box, Bertoglio finished off the thrashing.

On June 12, Argentina faces Nigeria in the first match of their World Cup campaign. South Korea and Greece are their other opponents in Group B.
